The demanding state of the economy has lead many local businesses to rely heavily on the resources and support the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce provides. As the number of benefits, programs and events the Chamber offers increases, so does the need for volunteer support. Consequently, two new interns have signed on to aid the Chamber in its goal to make a positive impact on Mississippi Gulf Coast, and as many businesses as possible.
Allison Zakaras and Jamie Allen began internships with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce in May; eager to assist the nonprofit and gain practical work experience related to their chosen career paths. While both have very different professional aspirations, the two have worked together to make a tremendous impact on the organization in only a few short months.
Allison Zakaras, 21, is a senior at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., where she is majoring in business administration with an emphasis on marketing. Zakaras is a Dean’s Scholar, and holds membership in Delta Delta Delta sorority, Phi Eta Sigma honorary society, and the Financial Management Association. She is captain of the Millsaps tennis team, and has previously worked at Bayou Bluff tennis club and completed an internship with The Guice Agency. Upon college graduation, she plans to obtain a Master’s degree and work in advertising.
Jamie Allen, 17, is a senior at Christian Collegiate Academy in Gulfport. She is secretary of student council, and serves on the Long Beach Youth Commission. Allen has assisted in publicizing numerous events for the community, and aided in the setup of the 2006 Mississippi Power Business Forum. She has achieved high honor roll for three years, and plays varsity basketball and volleyball for Christian Collegiate. Allen plans to major in international business with a minor in public relations or marketing.
Zakaras and Allen will continue their work with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce until mid-August.
