Science Café on the Coast is a collaboration between The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries, Harrison County Library System, Long Beach Public Library, the Hancock County Library System, Infinity Science Center and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Science Café on the Coast will host a presentation on "Microplastics" on Thursday, August 20th at 6:00pm at the Pass Christian Public Library.
Please join Elizabeth Englebretson, MSU Extension Plastic Free Gulf Coast program coordinator, for an evening of dialogue and hands-on investigation of microplastics in our water system. Microplastics are pieces of plastic measuring 5mm or smaller, the size of a sesame seed or a pencil eraser. During this Science Café we will discuss the different categories and types of microplastics, their effects on human health, economy, and ecology, and we will also filter water samples to look in real-time at microplastics in our water supply. If you would like to bring a water sample to filter please use a clean glass jar (at least 2 cups) and avoid heavy organic load (for example, please bring tap water, not pond water).
This event offers those with minimal background in science the chance to meet and discuss scientific issues in a relaxed social setting. Admission is free and open to the public with light refreshments available.
The Pass Christian Public Library is located at 111 Hiern Avenue Pass Christian, MS. For further information, please call 228-452-4596 or email w.allard@harrison.lib.ms.us
